A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the period preceding former President Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member recently and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," said an industry expert.

A small number of other traders also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
