Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
